Autopilot/Turn Coordinator

The Navaid Devices autopilot was designed specifically for homebuilders and is intended for use only in aircraft licensed in the experimental category.  It relieves the pilot work load in VFR cross-country flying, but is not approved for IFR use.

The autopilot is a single axis, electrically powered system requiring no signal inputs from external sources other than steering information from a GPS, LORAN or VOR.  Modern components and materials are used to make a simple, lightweight automatic flight control system.

DOES A HOMEBUILDER NEED AN AUTOPILOT?

The major benefit from an autopilot is that you enjoy flying more, which is probably your primary reason for having an airplane in the first place.  Having an autopilot keeps the airplane on course, regardless of crosswind conditions.  This leaves the pilot free to monitor his position and instruments more effectively, and to think out ahead of the the airplane.  You are in control, a more competent, confident pilot.  You fly a better trip without getting as tired, therefore you enjoy it more.

Safety is another consideration.  We take it as an article of faith: Anything that reduces the pilot work load also reduces the probability of pilot error.  An autopilot does more to reduce pilot work load than most other instruments you can buy.

To help you decide if you need an autopilot, just ask anyone whose uses a Navaid.  Many of our customers tell us that if things had to come off the aircraft, the autopilot would be one of the last things to go.
